Excellent Guide

(Nicaragua)

Already living in Nicaragua for 4 years. I wondered if I could learn anything new.

Your guide is excellent.

One area not covered is driving in Nicaragua. Is a Canadian/USA drivers license valid in Nicaragua? If so for how long. Does one need residency in order to get a Nicaraguan license?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for reaching out to me. I am glad that you liked my guide.

Not sure if you downloaded my FAQ list as well. In it, I touched upon the subject of driver's licenses, but I believe it's worth it to expand on it.

So, as for your questions...

1) Is a Canadian/USA drivers license valid in Nica? If so for how long?

On the US Embassy’s website it says: Short-term tourists who have a valid U.S. license are generally exempt from needing a Nicaraguan driver’s license. However, U.S. citizens who are Nicaraguan residents are required to have one.

The definition of "short-term" varies by source. Some say you can drive around for 30 days with your national license, others say for 3 months.

I've been living in Nicaragua for 5+ years, and have been stopped by the police several times. My German license has never been questioned, not before I became a resident nor after.

In short... you can keep driving with your Canadian / U.S. driver's license, and you most likely won't have any problems. If and when that changes, you can still get yourself a Nicaraguan license.

2) Does one need residency in order to get a Nica license?

Yes.
